Germany and Austria in 7 Days

Germany and Austria in 7 Days

Germany & Austria in 7 Days

High Country Marketing Manager Anna Schaefer and her husband, Caleb, recently took a trip to Germany and Austria, where they enjoyed great food, exploring the outdoors, and learning about the history and culture.

Q: Tell us about your travels in Germany and Austria. Where did you go? Where did you stay?

A: Munich > Fussen > Salzburg Austria > Lake region in Austria > Berchtesgaden (national park) > Munich.

We got a rental car and drove down south to Fussen, Germany; we saw beautiful castles there! We then drove east to Austria where we stayed a few days in Salzburg to be our central point. From there we drove out to the lake region in Austria where you can swim, paddle board, and boat in crystal clear lakes surrounded by mountains. The next day we drove to Berchtesgaden which had the most insane hikes. We ferried across the entire lake and made our way to the second lake there. It was stunning! After a few days there, we drove back to Munich, biked around the city which was perfect. We saw the sites quickly and had fun biking. Saw the surfers in English Garden and drank a lot of beer!

Q: Tell us about any essential items you packed / what could you have not lived without.

A: Caleb and I both wore the On Cloudhorizons which were the perfect easy trail shoes that were comfortable for our hiking days, and also great for cruising around the city. Used my Osprey Daylite for my carry-on and repurposed it for our hike. We kept our Nomadix towels in the pack for post-swimming in Lake Wolfgansee, Austria. We wore a lot of Vuori; it was hot on our hikes, so wearing high-quality athletic clothing was essential. We also wore our High Country hats any chance we could!

Q: Fill us in on your restaurant and shopping recommendations!

A: A trip highlight was eating at Lärchenhütte, a restaurant sitting on a mountain above Lake Wolfgansee in Austria. You hike up (or mountain bike!) and see the prettiest view of the blue lake and the surrounding mountains. The food was amazing - we went for breakfast - and the staff was so kind. Menus were all in German, so make sure you have Google Translate!

Q: Tell us your trip highlights!

A: Swimming in the beautiful lakes was definitely a highlight; it was a great way to have fun while slowing down to enjoy how beautiful it was. We also had really great food experiences; I got so tired of the German food (too much meat and potatoes) so we found some amazing local restaurants that had great owners and staff. We could tell regulars were dining there, which felt really fun and the food was amazing! I loved getting to talk to people from different countries, so it was fun to chat with the people around us at these spots.

Q: What would you do differently next time? Where did you wish you could have gone if anywhere?

A: Fussen, Germany was super touristy (around the beautiful castles), but TONS of people were biking in the town / around the lake outside the city which looked SO fun. If we had more time, biking/swimming would have been super fun in that area. If you like a little adrenaline rush, we saw people paragliding too! Another change I would have made would be spending more time in the Lake Region in Austria - staying on the water / visiting more lakes. It was just too beautiful! We also wish there was a Bayren Munich match when we were there; next time!!
